How I Come Back to Myself When I Start Feeling Off

Woman applying skincare during a quiet self-care moment at home

Some days I wake up feeling like I could take on the world.

Other days, everything feels heavier than it should.

I’m tired. I’m overthinking. The house feels chaotic. I’ve been taking care of everyone else, running from one thing to the next, and I realize I haven’t really checked in with myself in a while.

I used to think getting back to myself required some big reset.

A new routine. A perfect morning. A weekend away. A complete life overhaul.

It usually doesn’t.

Most of the time, coming back to myself happens through really small things—taking care of my body, changing the way I’m thinking, cleaning up my space, moving a little, putting myself together, or simply making time for something that feels like mine.

These are the things I come back to when I start feeling off.

1. I Get Myself Ready—Even If I’m Not Going Anywhere

This is one of the quickest ways for me to shift my mood.

When I wake up and stay in pajamas too long, my brain seems to stay in slow mode with me.

But when I wash my face, do my skincare, fix my hair a little and get dressed, something changes.

It’s almost like I’m telling my brain:

Okay. We’re awake. Let’s go.

I don’t mean full makeup and perfectly styled hair every morning. Sometimes getting ready means skincare, brushing my hair, changing into clothes that make me feel put together and calling it good.

It’s less about how I look and more about how I feel.

There’s something about taking those few minutes for myself that makes me feel more present in my own life.

And because I actually enjoy skincare, it has become one of those little rituals that feels like mine. I love trying different products and figuring out what makes my skin look and feel its best.

If you’re trying to simplify your routine too, I put together my simple skincare routine for busy moms with the products and steps I actually come back to.

I recently tried a Medicube face mask and have been having fun experimenting with a few new things too.

Products I actually use/love:

Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask — I’ve been using this as an occasional overnight treatment when I want a little extra hydration. It goes on really smooth, dries pretty quickly, and my skin feels hydrated and looks refreshed the next morning. One thing I’ve learned: I like using it the night before I wash my hair because it peels off almost like dried glue and can catch some of the little hairs around my face.

2. I Take Care of My Body Before Expecting More From It

This sounds obvious, but I’m always surprised by how different I feel when I’m actually doing the basics.

Drinking enough water.

Eating food that gives me energy instead of surviving on whatever is easiest.

Taking the vitamins and supplements that are part of my routine.

Stretching.

Resting when I need to.

If I’ve barely had water all day and haven’t eaten anything that makes me feel good, of course I’m going to feel drained.

One of the quickest differences I notice is hydration. When I drink plenty of water—especially with a hydration packet—I can genuinely feel my energy start coming back.

That has been a big mindset shift for me:

Instead of immediately asking, “Why do I feel so bad today?”

I try asking:

“Have I actually taken care of my body today?”

Sometimes the answer explains a lot.

Products I actually use/love:

KinderFarms Daily Hydration Electrolyte Powder — This is one of my favorite hydration packets to keep around. It’s technically marketed for kids, but I like it too, especially when I want something fruity and easy to drink. I notice such a difference in how I feel when I’m actually hydrated, and having something I enjoy drinking makes it much easier for me to keep up with my water.

LMNT Zero Sugar Electrolyte Drink Mix — LMNT is another one I really like, especially when I want something a little stronger and less sweet. When I’ve been busy, sweating, working out, or just realize I haven’t been drinking enough, adding electrolytes to my water is one of the easiest ways for me to get back on track.

3. I Move My Body Because It Changes How I Feel

Working out has always been one of my best stress relievers.

But my version of working out right now is not spending two hours in a gym or lifting huge weights.

Most of the time it happens in my living room or bedroom.

I stretch.

I use resistance bands.

I do squats.

I work my legs and glutes.

Sometimes it’s only ten or fifteen minutes.

And that still counts.

I’ve learned that I don’t need the perfect workout to feel the benefits of moving my body. Sometimes I just need to get my muscles working, breathe, and get out of my own head for a few minutes.

I almost always feel more confident afterward too.

Something I use regularly:

Renoj Resistance Bands — These are the bands I use for quick workouts at home. I like that I can grab them in my bedroom or living room and get ten or fifteen minutes of movement in without needing a gym or a bunch of equipment. I use them for things like squats, glute work, and other simple lower-body exercises, and they make an easy workout feel a little more challenging.

I also pay more attention to posture than I used to. I have scoliosis, so this is especially personal for me, but I notice such a difference in the way I feel when I’m standing taller instead of collapsing into myself all day.

Even something as simple as stretching, opening my shoulders and paying attention to how I’m carrying myself can make me feel more awake and confident.

4. I Reset My Space When My Brain Feels Cluttered

This one is almost immediate for me.

If a room has been bothering me for weeks, there is a point where I can physically feel the clutter taking up space in my head.

Then I clean it.

Move something around.

Deep clean a closet.

Clear a counter.

Rearrange a room.

And suddenly I feel calmer inside too.

I don’t think your home has to be spotless to feel peaceful. Mine definitely isn’t.

But when something has been quietly irritating me every time I walk past it, fixing that one space can feel like a reset button.

Sometimes my mental reset starts with cleaning out a drawer.

Sometimes it’s moving furniture around at 9 PM because suddenly I’ve decided the entire room needs to feel different.

If you know, you know.

The goal isn’t a perfect house.

It’s creating a space that gives your brain a little more room to breathe.

If your home has been feeling a little heavy lately too, these simple ways to make your home feel calmer are a good place to start.

5. I Pay Attention to the Way I’m Talking to Myself

Not every reset is physical.

A huge part of coming back to myself is catching the mental spiral before it takes over.

Overthinking.

Doubting myself.

Wondering what someone else thinks.

Taking something personally that probably wasn’t even about me.

Worrying that I’m behind.

I’ve gotten much better at reminding myself:

I know who I am.

I know what I want.

A hard day doesn’t mean everything is going wrong.

Someone else’s mood, opinion or choices do not have to change the direction I’m heading.

I try really hard to find something positive even in situations I wouldn’t have chosen.

Not because everything is always wonderful.

It isn’t.

But because I know how quickly my mindset can affect everything else.

Affirmations have always been part of that for me too. Sometimes you need to hear something enough times that eventually your brain starts believing you.

I also keep a longer list of positive affirmations for moms for the days when I need help shifting my mindset.

6. I Make Sure Something in My Life Is Mine

Motherhood can make this one surprisingly easy to lose.

So much of your day belongs to someone else.

Someone needs food.

Someone needs picked up.

Someone has an appointment.

Someone needs help.

Someone cannot find the thing that is directly in front of them.

And eventually you can forget what you actually enjoy.

For me, building Chelsea Denée has brought a piece of that back.

It started as something creative I enjoyed working on. Something I could learn about, build, dream about and make mine.

And even before it becomes everything I know it can become, it has already given me something important:

a part of myself outside of taking care of everyone else.

Your thing doesn’t have to be a business.

Maybe it’s gardening.

Reading.

Painting.

Working out.

Photography.

Redoing furniture.

Learning something new.

Anything that makes you think, Oh yeah. I like this. This feels like me.

I think every woman needs a little something that belongs to her.

7. Sometimes I Give Myself a Little Extra TLC

And sometimes the answer is simply:

My body hurts and I need to lie down with a heating pad.

That counts too.

I use a heating pad constantly when my neck or back feels tight, and a massage gun is another one of those things I reach for when my body needs a little extra attention.

There are days when self-care is mindset work and movement.

There are other days when it’s warmth, stretching and giving myself permission to stop pushing for a minute.

Both are valid.

A few things I actually reach for:

Mirakel Heat Neck Massager — My mom has this exact neck massager and really likes it. I’ve used it too, and it’s nice when I want something relaxing that I can just sit with instead of actively using a massage gun. The heat makes it feel especially soothing when my neck and shoulders are tight.

GENIANI Electric Heating Pad — A heating pad is one of those things I reach for when I want comfort more than anything else. I love using one on my neck, back, or wherever I’m feeling tense because the heat is so relaxing and helps me slow down for a minute.

TOLOCO Massage Gun — This is the massage gun I use when I want something stronger. It’s definitely powerful, so I don’t always reach for it when I’m trying to relax, but it really helps when I feel like I need deeper pressure to work through tight muscles and tension.

Coming Back to Yourself Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

I think this is what I’ve learned more than anything:

Coming back to yourself is usually not one dramatic moment.

It’s a bunch of little decisions.

Drink the water.

Wash your face.

Put on clothes that make you feel good.

Move your body for ten minutes.

Clean the room that has been driving you crazy.

Stop replaying the conversation.

Remind yourself where you’re going.

Make time for something you love.

Rest when your body is asking you to rest.

And then do it again tomorrow.

I still have off days. I still overthink. I still get overwhelmed and tired and need to reset.

The difference is that I know how to find my way back a little faster now.

You don’t have to completely reinvent yourself.

Sometimes you just need to start taking care of the person you already are.
